What to Wear to Universal Studios: A Family’s Guide
When you’re considering how to dress for a day at a theme park, you’ll want to consider several things. First, you’ll want to be comfortable! You’ll be walking around all day and possibly experiencing a variety of weather situations, so you’ll want to be prepared for that.
Second, you’ll want to wear something special, likely something that fits in with your surroundings and looks great in photos. If you’re headed to Universal, that might mean some Harry Potter-themed gear, a Minion’s shirt, or a Marvel tee. Some families like to get custom matching shirts, which adds an extra special flair and helps keep everyone together!
Lastly, you’ll want to consider any gear you might need and how you’ll carry it around. Plus, you’ll want to know about any clothing or gear restrictions the park may have.
We’ll cover all of that and more below!
Keeping it Cool and Comfy
Light and Airy: The Fabric of Fun
When it comes to theme park outfits, comfort is king! Think lightweight and breathable materials like cotton and linen. Our family swears by cotton t-shirts and linen shorts for those hot Florida days. And, oh boy, can it get hot!
Despite the warm days, indoor attractions and occasional cool evenings may call for a light jacket — something you can easily tie around your waist or stuff in a bag when not in use.
Stormy weather ahead
Both Florida and California can experience major weather and temperature swings in the same day. In fall, winter, and spring, the day might start out chilly, requiring a jacket or even a hat and gloves, but the day is likely to warm up later on.
In summer, it’ll probably be hot all day, but you might experience heavy rain storms in the afternoon (especially in Florida). So consider wearing layers and bringing a poncho to toss on, so you can keep having fun in the rain!
Sneakers vs. Sandals: The Great Debate
Walking is the name of the game at Universal Studios. Whether you’re a sneaker family or sandal clan, make sure your footwear is ready to clock in those miles. We’re a divided house on this: half swear by comfy sneakers, while the others are die-hard sandal fans (except for water rides, flip-flops are a no-go for safety reasons).
Your footwear choice doesn’t have to be expensive. For a while, I was rocking a pair of $10 Walmart sneakers that were super comfy for the entire day! Make sure whatever you choose has been broken in — don’t wear something brand new for the first time all day at a theme park.
Dressing for the Lands
Wizarding World Chic
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter sometimes feels like a second home to us! Many visitors like to wear wizard robes, scarves, and/or ties in their house colors (red for Gryffindor, blue for Ravenclaw, yellow for Hufflepuff, and green for Slytherin).
A magic wand is a must-have accessory! Just remember, Florida heat and heavy robes can be a tricky mix. Lightweight house-themed tees or tank tops are a great alternative.

At Toon Lagoon, you’re bound to get soaked! Quick-dry fabrics are your best friend here. Think water-resistant shorts and moisture-wicking tops. And since it’s all about the funnies, why not wear a tee with your favorite comic strip character?
Seuss Landing: Whimsical and Bright

Universal Studios shirts
Sometimes your love for Universal in general trumps your love for a specific land in the park! Share your enthusiasm with a Universal Studios shirt. You can go retro and wear a shirt that resembles what we might have worn to the park back in the 90s, or go with a more modern design!

Custom family theme park shirts: Be THAT family!
The family that dresses together, stays together, right?
It can also be lots of fun to design your own, unique custom shirts when you’re visiting Universal Studios with a group. Lots of families do this, especially when they are celebrating something special like a birthday, anniversary, or family reunion.
There are tons of places online where you can find cool shirt designs that you can customize with your family members’ names, or the name of your event. Etsy is one of the best places to browse, but you can also find options on Amazon, or make your own design at Zazzle.
Dressing for each land at Universal Studios can add an extra layer of fun to your visit. Whether you’re chasing dinosaurs, casting spells, or hanging out with Homer Simpson, the right outfit can immerse you even deeper into these incredible worlds.
Just remember the golden rule: comfort is key, so dress for adventure and fun!
Essential Accessories
Backpacks vs. Fanny Packs
To carry all your theme park essentials (snacks, water bottles, sunblock), a lightweight backpack or fanny pack is a must. Universal is great at providing lockers in convenient places, and these lockers are free to use while you ride the rides that require you to store your bag.
Stay Hydrated: Water Bottles Are a Must
Florida heat is no joke, folks! A refillable water bottle is your best friend. There are plenty of spots to refill throughout the parks, keeping you hydrated all day long.
Don’t Forget the Sunblock and Sunglasses
Protecting your skin and eyes is crucial. Apply sunblock before you leave home or your resort, and reapply throughout the day. Sunglasses are a must too, to keep you from squinting all day.
Light Jackets and Rain Ponchos
Florida weather can be unpredictable. A light jacket for cooler months (November to April) and a rain poncho for those sudden showers are wise additions to your gear.

Practical Tips for Theme Park Clothing
Universal Studios Dress Code: What Not to Wear
Universal Studios has a dress code to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment. Avoid anything with offensive language, costumes that could cause a disturbance or give a false impression of employment, and anything that could restrict your movement.
Don’t bring anything resembling a weapon, and remember that you’re not allowed to cover your face, so no costume masks!
Prepare for the Water Rides
If you’re planning to brave the water rides, consider a quick-drying outfit or pack a change of clothes. Nothing’s worse than squelching around in soaked clothes!
Pocket Power: Keep Your Essentials Close
Outfits with pockets are a game-changer. I love when I can spend all day at the park without having to carry anything.
Keep your cell phone, theme park tickets, hand sanitizer, portable charger, and other personal items easily accessible. Bonus points if your shorts have a zip pocket for added security.
Accessorize Wisely
Minimal but functional accessories are key. A hat, a pair of sunglasses, and maybe a themed lanyard for your ticket — simple but effective.
FAQs about What to Wear to Universal Studios
While themed outfits are great, full costumes are generally reserved for younger children. Older kids and adults should avoid full costumes to comply with the park’s dress code.
September and October in Florida and southern California are still pretty warm, so lightweight outfits are ideal. However, evenings can get cooler, so a light jacket might come in handy.
During the cooler months, layering is key. Start with a comfortable base layer, like a t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt, and add a lightweight hoodie or sweater. A water-resistant jacket is also a good idea for unexpected showers. Don’t forget comfortable closed-toe shoes and socks to keep your feet warm.
Avoid wearing anything that could be considered a safety hazard or uncomfortable for a long day of walking. This includes loose jewelry, costumes with long trains, high heels, and clothing with offensive graphics or language.
Also, there’s nothing that says you can’t wear clothing from other theme parks (ahem, Disney World), but be prepared for some potential teasing from people who will let you know you’re in the wrong park!
If you’re planning to hop over to the water parks, wear a swimsuit underneath your regular theme park clothes. Quick-dry shorts and moisture-wicking tops are ideal. Remember to bring waterproof sandals or flip-flops, a towel, and a change of clothes for after the water park adventures.
Most bags and backpacks are allowed. You’ll need to store it in lockers for certain rides, so nothing too bulky. Hard-sided coolers are prohibited, as are soft-side coolers larger than 8.5″ wide x 6″ high x 6″ deep. You cannot bring any glass containers.
